Alt-metal royals Faith No More were in a weird spot while writing and recording 1995’s King for a Day…Fool for a Lifetime, and the band’s most eclectic album sure reflects this in its sound. Following the early Nineties departure of longtime guitarist Jim Martin, vocalist Mike Patton’s Mr. Bungle pal Trey Spruance joined the band briefly to riff through anything from darkened-alley punk-metal (“Get Out”), to scatological thrashing (“Cuckoo for Caca”), to big band grandeur (“Star A.D.”), to tear-in-your-beer bar-rock (“Take this Bottle”), to free-spirited, choir-assisted gospel subversion (“Just a Man”). It’s a wild but rewarding listen, tailor-made to spin for a lifetime.
